Origin of lamé yarns

Lamé yarns, also known as “effect yarns”, originated in the 1940s and have a metallic appearance capable of giving garments a shiny look.

These yarns are made of various synthetic polyester fibres that are interwoven with each other using aluminium or silver vapours and then dyed.

Types and applications of lamé yarns

Lamé yarns can be made to imitate different kinds of metal as required: from gold to silver, from bronze to copper or pewter.

Lamé yarns can also be combined with other natural fibres such as cotton, silk or wool, or with synthetic fibres such as nylon to add shine and charm to women's clothing.

For many years lamé yarns were penalised by the technological and physical limitations of the polymers from which they are made, and have long been the subject of research and development.

In recent times, the first recycled lamé yarns suitable for GRS certification have appeared on the market.
