Origin of acrylic: synthetic fibre for durable garments

Acrylic is a fibre that was created in the 1940s under the trade name Orlon^® as an alternative to wool.

It is a synthetic fibre consisting mostly of acrylonitrile, a chemical compound used mainly in the production of plastics.

Because of its strength and ease of use, acrylic is now used in economic clothing, which requires properties similar to those of wool products while being able to withstand frequent washing.

Acrylic is a hydrophobic material and tends to retain stains and oil-based dyes.

It is also lightfast and resistant to many aggressive chemicals, and is quite prone to pilling.
