Origin and history of viscose

Viscose is an artificial fibre obtained from cellulose, the pulp contained in several fast-growing trees. The cellulose is then immersed and dissolved in chemical solvents, resulting in an extrudable viscose paste and finally the fibre.

The viscose has a high sheen, so it was initially called “artificial silk” and then became known as “rayon” in 1924.

It was created in response to the demand for cheaper sericultural fabrics.

Properties of viscose yarns

Viscose is a biodegradable fibre that is very wear-resistant, absorbent and highly breathable.

The viscose yarns can therefore be used to make fresh garments that are pleasant to wear. In fact, since it comes from cellulose, viscose has the properties and sheen of silk, but retains the softness of vegetable fibres.

Sustainability

The original version of viscose is Rayon, but over time many variants have been created with certified raw materials and less environmentally unfriendly production processes. Examples of this are some viscose products made from bamboo, milk, maize, or castor oil, and brand names such as TENCEL™, made with an environmentally friendly controlled closed-loop process.

Our yarns with viscose can be FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®) certified.
