Find out about the raw materials of fine natural silk yarns

Silk is a protein fibre that comes from the solidified saliva of the silkworm, the Bombix mori.

The silkworm forms a cocoon consisting of a single continuous thread that can be from 300 to 900 metres in length.

It takes 3 to 4 days to create the cocoon, and it is composed of 20 to 30 layers.

Properties of silk fibres and yarns

Silk is a light, elegant, elastic and durable fibre.

It is especially appreciated for its sheen.

Silk yarns are used to make clothing that can offer a high degree of freshness in summer and great warmth in winter.

Moreover, silk yarns are known to be highly insulating and able to absorb up to a third of their weight in moisture.

A very environmentally-friendly fibre

Silkworms feed on the leaves of the mulberry tree. Mulberry plantations encourage maintenance of the natural ecosystem and raise the level of biodiversity.

Moreover, mulberry plantations cannot be treated with fertilisers and pesticides because they would pose a risk to the silkworms.

Finally, silk fibre processing is very environmentally friendly in terms of atmospheric emissions.
