Where polyester comes from

Polyester is a synthetic material derived from oil and is among the most widely used in the textile industry.

It was first sold as a textile material in 1948 under the British trademark Terylene.

Of the various types, the one used for fabrics is called PET, or polyethylene terephthalate.

Polyester yarns: versatile and elastic

In recent years, modern technologies and new processes have considerably improved the quality of this polyester fibre, making it very versatile and suitable for different conditions of use. For this reason it is increasingly used in the manufacture of polyester yarns for the textile and clothing industries.

It is a fairly elastic material with a high resistance to abrasion and tear, it is water-repellent, guarantees good thermal insulation and can be washed many times without causing the garment to shrink.

How to make polyester yarns sustainable

Polyester is derived from non-renewable fossil sources and this is certainly one of the aspects that makes it less sustainable than natural or artificial fibres.

Despite this, the use of recycled polyester, an ecological alternative, is becoming increasingly widespread as it reduces the use of virgin raw materials.

New biobased polymers such as Sorona® fibre are another sustainable alternative to conventional polyester.

The microplastics released throughout its life cycle is another factor that contributes to the low sustainability of polyester.

To overcome this problem, washing bags and washing machine filters are becoming common on the market, as they provide economic alternatives to reduce the release of microplastics into domestic drains by almost 90%.

Our yarns with polyester can be GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified by ICEA.
