How wool fibres are obtained

Wool is a natural fibre of animal origin, obtained mainly from the fleece of sheep, rabbits and camelids.

Wool fibres are obtained by cutting off the animal fleece through an operation known as “shearing”.

The wool fibres have numerous undulations that give it its characteristic curliness. This particular structure allows the wool to incorporate the air in contact with the body, creating an insulating “cushion” that heats in winter and protects from heat in summer.

The properties of fine, warm wool yarns

Wool features a high insulating capacity and a high hygroscopic power that allows it to absorb up to 30% of its weight in water without becoming wet.

It also has good wear and tear resistance, and is elastic and resilient.

It is highly compatible with dyeing processes.

Wool yarns are 100% natural and renewable

Wool is a 100% natural, completely renewable fibre. In fact, sheep produce a new fleece to be sheared every year.

In addition, wool clothing has been shown to be among the most recycled materials.

The wool industry is accused of subjecting sheep to painful removal of a skin flap in the perianal region, so-called Mulesing, without sedation in order to prevent parasitic infestation. It is therefore important to select Mulesing Free fibres and yarns.

Our yarns with wool can be RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certified by ICEA.
