Origin of alpaca fibre. A luxury fibre

Alpaca fibre is obtained from the hair of the alpaca, a mammal of the Camelidae family, originating in South America. The two main breeds are: Huacaya and Suri.

Alpaca is classified as a luxury fibre since it is more durable than sheep’s wool, contains no lanolin and is available in 22 natural colours.

Alpaca wool yarns: all the qualities of a noble fibre

This fibre is used to make the alpaca wool yarns used in some of the finest fabrics in the world. They give a hand that is very similar to that of high-end cashmere – light, with an extremely soft touch.

Alpaca fibre is strong, warm, very elastic and extremely fine. However, the fibre properties vary greatly depending on the quality of alpaca.

The Huacaya fleece, for example, is curly and grows perpendicular to the animal’s body, giving the alpaca its typical “fluffy” appearance. The Suri fleece grows downwards along the camelid's body and is long and silky.

Sustainability

Alpaca fibre is a natural, renewable material.

As with all fibres of animal origin, it is important to select raw materials from certified farms in order to maintain high quality standards without undermining the health or welfare of the animals, countries and populations involved in their production.

Our yarns with alpaca wool can be RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) certified by ICEA.
