Cotonificio Olcese Ferrari offers a wide range of yarns for orthogonal weaving in national and international textile industries.

What is orthogonal weaving?

The term orthogonal weaving refers to the process in which the warp yarns (arranged vertically) and the weft yarns (arranged horizontally) cross each other perpendicularly to form a structure called the “weave”.

Depending on how they cross, the weave can be plain, twill or satin.

The warp defines the length of the fabric while the weft defines its width. The side margins are called selvedges.

The warp is the body of the fabric, more rigid and resistant than the weft because it serves to withstand the elastic tension of the loom and acts as a support. The weft, on the other hand, can be considered the “filler” that defines its pattern.

Benefits of yarns for orthogonal weaving

An infinite variety of fabrics with different weights, patterns, colours and properties can be made, depending on the yarns used and the weave chosen.

Fabrics made with orthogonal weaving are generally more resistant and durable in the long term.
