Cotonificio Olcese Ferrari offers a wide range of tricot and knitting yarns. Find out about our production.

History and applications of tricot yarns

The term tricot derives from the French word “tricoter” and means, in fact, “knit”.

This type of fabric has distant origins: it goes back to 4th century B.C. Greece, a period in which heavy knitted fabrics were made by hand for use in ceremonial clothes. Working by hand was later replaced by the use of knitting needles.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the industrial revolution brought the first steam-powered flat tricot machines, which have since gradually evolved.

Finally, in recent years, the mechanics have been gradually replaced by electronics, allowing production of a wide variety of patterns and applications.

When combined with fine tricot yarns, the tricot technique can be used to make an unlimited number of garments: from the soft, warm oversized winter sweaters to accessories such as scarves, ponchos and caps, even with lurex details that are much appreciated by female wearers.
